Investor Trends in Technology

This paper looks at the attitudes of several key demographics of investors towards technology, and explores how advisors can make the right choices to serve those key demographics.

On the surface, today's advisors and broker-dealers are faced with a conundrum: how to continue to add value to client relationships in a world where investors have access to robust technology options via their desktops, tablets and smartphones, as well as self-service opportunities. Depending on how they embrace their choices, today's investors, whether Baby Boomers, Generation X, Y or Millennials can manage accounts, view portfolios from multiple perspectives and even execute trades from anywhere. The increasing availability of a variety of technology tools, software and apps—paired with investors' growing level of comfort accessing even the most secure information online—might seem to predict the demise of the traditional advisor, or at a minimum, a marginalization of the role the advisor plays.
